Students preparing for the TOEFL must first determine the score requirements of their chosen undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Certain score ranges are associated with specific levels of fluency. The International English Language Testing System has classified composite TOEFL scores into the following categories: "expert" (118-120), "very good" (110-117), "good" (94-109), "competent" (60-93), "modest" (35-59), "limited" (32-34), and "extremely limited" (0-31). These general classifications, however, are not universally observed by postsecondary institutions in the English-speaking world. It is common for two different departments within the same university to have two different TOEFL standards. With very few exceptions, a total score of 100 is sufficient for the vast majority of degree programs, even at the most selective schools. Many of the better public universities in the United States are perfectly happy with scores in the 80s, and a number of programs will accept scores in the 70s or even 60s. In short, the TOEFL score a given student will need depends on the individual school or department.
Manhattan Review's TOEFL prep courses and private tutoring have helped countless students pass the TOEFL and begin their studies at elite universities such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Princeton, the University of Chicago, Tufts, Swarthmore, Georgetown, Columbia, UCLA, and the University of Virginia. Our students learn more than just the skills necessary to pass the TOEFL. They also become more fluent with the English language, which helps them succeed in their coursework and in their future professional lives. Many of our past TOEFL clients have chosen to remain in the United States to accept jobs at Fortune 500 companies (including Ford Motor, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and United Technologies). Others have chosen to return to Paris for employment with prominent local firms, such as Europ Assistance, Sanofi Pasteur, Turner Broadcasting System France, and Studio 100 Animation. Success in the English-speaking world is, to a great extent, dependent on the ability to speak the English language. With Manhattan Review's TOEFL prep services in Paris, you can start becoming a better English speaker today.
